How laser hair removal works
The laser light targets the pigment in the hair. Only hairs in the active growth phase respond well, and not all hairs are in that phase at the same time. That is why several treatments with suitable intervals are needed. Many courses consist of about six to eight treatments or more, depending on the area, skin type, hair colour, hair thickness, hormones and how you respond. Sometimes maintenance treatments remain desirable.
Treated follicles can produce less or no hair for a long time, but new or dormant follicles can become active later, for example due to hormonal changes. Dark, thicker hairs usually respond most clearly because they contain more pigment.
Four wavelengths and skin cooling
The diode laser combines four wavelengths: 755 nm (relatively superficial, can help with thinner hairs that contain enough pigment), 808 nm (widely used in diode laser hair removal), 940 nm (an additional wavelength within the combined range) and 1064 nm (penetrates relatively deeply and is absorbed less by pigment in the surface of the skin). The technology alone does not decide the outcome; the assessment and personal settings do. The cooled handpiece helps to cool the skin during treatment.
How a course works at Bellani
- Free intake: your wishes, skin, hair growth, health, medication and earlier experiences are discussed, and you get a realistic explanation of what is possible.
- Personal treatment plan: the area, settings, expected interval and price are agreed beforehand.
- Treatment with cooling: what you feel can vary from cold and warmth to light pricking. Your comfort and skin reaction are checked during the treatment.
- Evaluation: before each next session the result and skin reaction are assessed, and settings or planning are adjusted where needed.
Treatments are carried out by Nicky Drenth, a BIG-registered nurse (BIG number 49918580730), or by a practitioner from the Bellani team, with the same equipment, according to fixed protocols and under her nursing supervision. For intimate areas, the area to be treated is agreed beforehand and skin outside it is covered where possible.

A package contains 8 sessions for the price of 7, paid at once or in three instalments. The package is a price agreement, not a promise that exactly eight sessions are needed or that a certain result will be reached. A free intake is required before a new laser course starts.
When extra assessment is needed
- White, grey, very light blonde and some red hairs contain little pigment and often respond only a little or not at all.
- During pregnancy Bellani does not carry out cosmetic laser hair removal; afterwards it is assessed again when starting is appropriate.
- Recent sun, sunbeds, self-tanner and certain medication can be reasons to postpone a treatment.
- Active skin problems, wounds or infections in the area must first heal or be assessed.
- Tattoos are not lasered over; these areas are carefully avoided.
- Different skin types can possibly be treated, but a dark or tanned skin needs an extra careful assessment and suitable settings. Not every combination of skin and hair is suitable.
Coming from Alkmaar
Bellani has no branch in Alkmaar; all laser treatments take place at Flemingstraat 40 in Heerhugowaard, on the Zandhorst business park. Prices are the same for clients from Alkmaar as for clients from Heerhugowaard. There is free parking at the practice, and according to the current schedule evening appointments are also possible. Travel time depends on where you start, so check your route planner before you leave.

Shave the area according to the personal advice, usually 24 to 48 hours beforehand. Waxing and epilating are not recommended before and during the course.
Can I go in the sun around a laser treatment?
Recent sun, sunbeds and self-tanner increase the risk of an unwanted skin reaction. Always mention it when your skin has had sun; depending on your skin it may be necessary to postpone the appointment.
How does the package of eight treatments work?
You receive eight treatments and pay the price of seven single treatments, at once or in three instalments. The package price differs per zone.
