A PICO laser delivers very short pulses of energy. Bellani in Heerhugowaard uses it for tattoo removal or fading, selected pigment spots such as sun spots, age spots and freckles, removal of old permanent make-up on the eyebrows, and fractional treatment of skin texture and acne scars. Every PICO treatment starts with a personal assessment; for tattoos, pigment and eyebrow PMU the intake is free.

How a PICO laser works

For ink and pigment, the energy is aimed at pigment particles, which break up into smaller fragments that the body then clears gradually. In a fractional treatment the energy is divided over microscopically small treatment zones; this triggers a controlled healing response in the skin. The effect develops gradually and differs per skin and indication. A device alone does not decide which treatment is appropriate: the assessment of your skin, health, wishes and reaction to earlier sessions matters just as much.

Pigment spots

An intake can be useful for selected superficial pigment spots: sun spots, age spots, freckles, local sun damage and certain dark discolourations after inflammation, on the face, hands or body. The treated spot can first become darker and then gradually fade or flake off superficially. Pigment spots often need about 1–3 sessions.

Only pigment that seems suitable for cosmetic laser treatment during the intake is treated. Moles and suspicious skin changes are not treated cosmetically; new, changing, bleeding, itchy or irregular spots must first be assessed by a doctor. Melasma and hormonally influenced pigment need extra care and are not automatically suitable for laser treatment.

Removing old eyebrow PMU

Old or unwanted permanent make-up and microblading on the eyebrows can be faded with the PICO laser. Cosmetic pigments are composed differently from many tattoo inks: old eyebrow PMU can have turned grey, blue, red, orange or yellow, and several correction layers may be present. Some pigments can first become darker under laser light. That is why Bellani starts with a free intake and a free test spot.

Only eyebrow PMU is treated, with full external eye protection. Bellani does not treat eyeliner, because the eyes cannot be protected well enough in that area, and currently does not offer removal of lip PMU. Full removal or a fixed number of treatments cannot be promised beforehand.

Fractional treatment of skin texture and acne scars

Fractional PICO treatment can be discussed for acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines and an uneven skin texture. The controlled skin reaction supports natural healing and the production of new collagen, so that the skin can look gradually smoother and more even in the weeks and months after a course. Scars usually do not disappear completely; the aim is a visible, realistic improvement. This often takes a series of about 3–5 sessions.

Many PICO treatments take about 10 to 30 minutes; the first appointment includes extra time for assessment and explanation. Tattoo and pigment treatment are often described as short taps or pricks, and a fractional treatment can feel warm or prickling. Bellani uses skin cooling. Tattoo removal is described on the page tattoo removal.

Does pigment become darker after the treatment?

It can. Suitable pigment can look darker straight after the treatment and then gradually fade or flake off. Do not scratch and protect the area well from the sun.

Why is a test spot needed for eyebrow PMU?

Cosmetic pigment can turn darker or show a different undertone after laser light. A test spot gives extra information about the first reaction before a larger area is treated.

Do acne scars disappear completely?

That is usually not a realistic expectation. Fractional treatment aims at a gradual improvement of texture and visibility.

Is there recovery time after a PICO treatment?

Most people can continue their day, although the skin can react visibly for a while. Do not plan important occasions right after a first treatment.
